Organizational Information

Type of Environmental Education Provider:  State Gov't

Mission Statement:  The mission of the California Park and Recreation Department / Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve is to provide for the health, inspiration and education of the people of California by helping preserve the state's extraordinary biological diversity, protecting its most valued natural and cultural resources, and creating opportunities for high-quality outdoor recreation. The goal of its educational programs is to provide interactive, hands-on, thematic bilingual environmental education to local and regional students and the community, working in partnership with local schools, community groups, and government agencies. The Tijuana River N.E.R.R offers free visits and interpretive programs for elementary, middle, and high school student groups as well as other youth groups (ecology clubs, service groups, etc) on topics including native plants, birds, and marsh and upland ecosystems. Most curriculum materials for the visits, as well as pre- and post-visit materials, are available in English and Spanish, and are integrated with the California State Science Framework. Before bringing groups to the Reserve, teachers must participate in a workshop at the Reserve (length of the workshop depends on the program). Visits generally last two and a half hours, are scheduled Monday through Friday, and must be reserved at least three weeks prior to the visit. The Reserve also offers a junior ranger program, teacher training workshops, and interpretive programs for the general public.
