Organizational InformationType of Environmental Education Provider: Not for Profit, State Gov't, Federal Gov't Mission Statement: The Carrizo Plain Natural Monument is a unique and diverse area influenced by the San Joaquin Valley on the east and the coast ranges on the west. It is a 250,000 acre area that remains open and relatively free of human alteration. It supports some of the most robust populations of many endangered, threatened and rare plant and animal species in the state of California while providing a beautiful backdrop for viewing other species in their natural habitats. The Carrizo Plain Natural Monument is home to the Guy L. Goodwin Education Center. The Education Center opened in December of 1993. The structure was built with donated funds from many sources, both public and private. This included a grant from the Goodwin family, in memory of Guy L. Goodwin, a local geologist/rancher who was particularly interested in education and natural history and loved the Carrizo Plain. Much of the work involved in building the Center and planting the surrounding native plant garden, was done by volunteers. See also the Guy L. Goodwin Education Center provider record.
