Description:  A nine-week unit, Ecology and Evolution, Islands of Change (2000, 210 p.) investigates these two biological processes using the Galapagos Islands as a case study. Nineteen activities for grades 5—8 examine the environmental forces that influence interactions between organisms (Galapagos finch, Galapagos giant tortoise, cacti, flightless cormorant and marine iguana, for example) and potentially lead to change. Geologic history, human history on the Galapagos, plate tectonics, ocean currents, climate diversity, weather patterns, island biodiversity, introduced species, classification, isolation and adaptation, and natural selection are among the topics covered. Activities are aligned with the National Science Education Standards.
