They learn the life cycles of a flowering plant and how living things must meet certain needs in order to survive and reproduce. Students also explore the strength of tubular structures, how roots absorb water, leaf adaptation, reproductive adaptation and how plants provide for the success of the next generation. Students research plant populations and propagate native plants to be used in restoration projects in their adopted watershed. Unit binder includes the lush Botany for All Ages book by Jorie Hunken and The New England Wild Flower Society; and Flower Power and Fly a Leaf Folios developed by the Outdoor Biology Instructional Strategies of the Lawrence Hall of Science, UC Berkeley, which is produced by Delta Education. The Plants Solve Problems of Survival Classroom Kit is used to implement this Curriculum Unit.
