Organizational Information

Type of Environmental Education Provider:  Not for Profit

Mission Statement:  The Avila Beach Marine Institute is a nonprofit educational support organization dedicated to providing children, their parents and educators with unique opportunities to be delighted and amazed by the ocean, its inhabitants, its uses, its history and its importance to mankind.

The Avila Beach Marine Institute offers educational programs based on marine science and the history behind it. Just a few of the subjects that can be covered in one of our programs include squid dissection, plankton, marine mammals, sharks & rays, water chemistry, rocky intertidal organisms and their adaptations (aka, touch tank), and so on. Teachers have the option of what subject matter to focus on. We also offer the "Marine Biologist for a Day," which takes the kids out on a passenger certified vessel to perform numerous scientific duties and experiments, including setting a net and helping to catch some local marine fauna. We occasionally have scholarships available as well, for which instructors can just inquire about when they call.
