Time: 7:30pm to 9:00pm
Description:Silverswords, members of the sunflower family, are widely known to tourists of the Hawaiian Islands for their beautiful rosettes of silvery foliage and spectacular flower displays. Studies underway for
decades have yielded surprising findings that enhance appreciation of the evolutionary change that has characterized diversification of this endangered assemblage of plants. Studies suggest that Hawaiian planthopper, a sap-feeding group of endemic insects, and silversword diversifications represent a major example of co-speciation. UC Berkeley botanist Bruce Baldwin and entomologist George Roderick will provide a vivid overview of diversity and share their latest findings. See live plants of the silversword alliance and hear recordings of the rarely heard mating calls of Hawaiian planthoppers!
