Description: Unit 5: Conserving Natural Resources
Through 20 interdisciplinary and thematic lessons using the constructivist process, fifth- and sixth-grade teachers help their students to learn about different natural resources, the origin of materials used to make common objects, and the importance of conserving natural resources. Literature is integrated into the curriculum and Henry David Thoreau and Jane Goodall are the featured heroes. At the end of the unit, students participate in projects that enhance their environment. The lessons support the following subconcepts:
- Living things depend on natural resources - air, water, soil, sunlight, minerals, plants, and animals.
- The homes of wild animals and human beings are made from natural resources.
- People use and affect natural resources.
- People can choose to conserve and protect natural resources.
