Description:  Investigating the Oak Community (2000, 120 p.) is a project-based learning curriculum guide for students in grades 4—8. Focusing entirely on the oak woodlands of California, 17 activities explore and identify oak species, oak-dependent wildlife, ecological processes occurring in oak communities, the significance of oak communities to Californians, and steps necessary to engage in action projects (e.g., surveying the school grounds for oaks, raising funds for a local oak community conservation effort, or developing a long-term oak community monitoring project). Appendices include tips for tree planting ceremonies, student journals and portfolios, tools for measuring oaks, soil studies, additional resources, and glossary.
