Description:  This regional competition of the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl has one of the best record of any local area or state in the nation with the DWP championship team reaching the national finals in the last five consecutive years in eight of the last 11 years. This competition produced four national titles. Teams from Venice High School in l996 and l997, Van Nuys High School in l995, and North Hollywood High School in 2001 won the championship. Also, North Hollywood High School placed second in 1998 and 1999. Venice High School captured the DWP Science Bowl title in February 2005. The Science Bowl is patterned after the old General Electric College Bowl T.V. program except that the questions are all technical in nature. The regional area covers high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District and private/parochial schools in the city of Los Angeles.
